Fundraising During a Pandemic

Musicians are some of the most famous and influential people in the world. The Beatles were famously "bigger than Jesus". Well, in times of confusion, uncertainty, and loss many artists are helping in so many great ways. The Beatles themselves hosted a Yellow Submarine movie watch party on YouTube. The amount of fundraisers and awareness these artists are raising is making a difference. In a time where we can't just hold Live Aid part 2 due to the nature of the virus' transmission, artists are taking to the internet. Some artists are simply just doing it in hopes of keeping people entertained and indoors and others are raising money for the cause. Both very honorable and amazing things to do.

Post Malone held a digital concert on YouTube where he covered Nirvana songs. He wore a flower dress as a nod to the late Nirvana frontman and lead singer, Kurt Cobain who also wore a floral dress to a 1990 performance. The concert lasted 1 hour and 17 minutes and contributed to the WHO’s COVID-10 Solidarity Response Fund which many YouTubers are also contributing to and Youtube is matching dollar for dollar up to $5 million.

100 Gecs also did their part by throwing a digital festival which you could attend on minecraft and those who couldn't attend could watch live on YouTube or Twitch. The festival was titeld Square Garden and featured 100 Gecs and Charli XCX as co-headliners as well as many other acts including Dorian Electra and Party Gripp. The concert had a lot of technical issues and towards the end, the livestream couldn't capture what was going on. But the event was essentially a livestream of music and a minecraft player up on the stage moving around that was supposedly the artist. Although there was no live music like in most concerts or festivals, the event was wholesome and raised money through the sale of VIP passes which would go to Feeding America.

Many artists are also taking to Instagram Live in order to entertain their fans. Rex Orange County, for example, has been performing "free concerts" from the comfort of his own home and the music has been amazing. Tory Lanez also broke the record earlier this quarantine for most concurrent viewers on an Instagram Live. He and his live show, however, aptly titled "Quarantine Radio" was temporarily banned. Miley Cyrus has also been streaming on Instagram live with guests although it's mainly been conversations rather than music. There was also the One World: Together at home live stream that featured many artists and lasted over 8 hours which raised money for Coronavirus relief as well.
